There are three power plan settings available in Windows 8 power settings are Power Saver,Balance and High Performance.

Normally your PC running on balance power setting. In balance mode, your PC is running normally and save unused power. Balance mode is best for your battery life.

High Performance mode is used when you like to play games and other high impact programs because in high performance CPU running with full energy. But keep in your mind the high performance mode is reduce your battery life.
